Do you use synthetic ingredients?
Yes, we do. We strive to use natural products and essential oils whenever possible, but the truth is, virtually every body product or candle you’ve ever bought uses synthetic ingredients. Even if the company uses only uses essential oils for fragrance and adds no mineral chelators, the lye is synthetically produced. We will NEVER use parabens or other nasty preservatives, but there are legitimate reasons to use “unnatural” ingredients in soap and other skincare and body care products.
- SODIUM AND/OR POTASSIUM HYDROXIDE- Lye is a powerful alkaline that, when combined with fatty acids, yields soap. A hundred years ago, many people obtained lye through by leaching potash (potassium hydroxide) from the ashes in their wood burning stoves. However, this yields an inconsistent product with variable purity. Using synthesized hydroxides allows the soap maker to precisely replicate a recipe every time and to ensure with reasonable certainty texture, pH, and other characteristics of the finished soap.
- FRAGRANCE- We use natural fragrance whenever possible (purely from essential oils and plant absolutes). However, certain essential oils such as sandalwood are extremely expensive and environmentally destructive to harvest. So we don’t use it, and instead use various natural and man made replacements. Likewise, rosewood, ambergris, and a few other natural fragrance ingredients are simply cost-prohibitive and/or Earth-destroying.Cost and environmental issues aside, some synthetic aroma-chemicals are just worth using. Aldehydes make it possible to produce fragrances that can’t be replicated using natural oils, like peach or berries. Calone gives us the scent of the ocean and Ion-ones yield almost hyperreal violet and iris aromas. It’s also worth noting here that some aroma-chemicals are merely synthesized versions of the natural constituents of essential oils. Isoeugenol, for instance, replaces the eugenol found in essential oils of clove, cinnamon, allspice. Further, “natural” fragrances are not always a good thing. Overdo it with spearmint or wintergreen oils, and your skin will pay the price. Likewise, cinnamon and clove essential oils have burned more than a few wet shavers. We almost always include some essential oil in the “fragrance” we use in any of our product. For us, while there are chemical agents and preservatives we'd rather not use, most discussions about “synthetic” ingredients are a non-starter. We use the least-processed fats we can and go way above standard to avoid harmful synthetic fragrance ingredients. We use as much “natural” stuff as possible. But we're not scared of chemistry.
